Rich finds from ancient cemetery in Greece 09/10/2008 ATHENS, Greece A total of 915 graves have been excavated over the past eight years at the site of Arhontiko, about 530 kilometers (330 miles) northwest of Athens. Archaeologists estimate this represents just five percent of the cemetery. The men were mostly in full armor, with helmets adorned with incised gold strips, iron swords with gold on the handles, spears and knives. Gold foil sheets with embossed ornamentation adorn the leather breastplates, clothing, footwear and hand coverings of the warriors. Apart from gold and silver jewelry, numerous other objects, such as bronze and clay vases, clay idols, metal likenesses of farm carts, furniture and spits accompanied the male burials. { SO THIS KINDA WORKS WITH THE THEORY THAT ONLY A VERY FEW BELIEVED WAS TRUE. THERE WERE LEATHER BREASTPLATES/CURIASS' ALL ALONG! NOT JUST LINOTHORAX'S MADE ONLY FROM LINEN! }
Bronze helmet with gold decoration from a mid-sixth- century-BC warrior’s grave. Many Macedonian officers were buried in full armor, together with swords, spears and knives.

Graves dating from 650-279 B.C., Macedonian warriors lying at eternal rest for more than 2,500 years in the ancient graveyard at Archontiko, Pella, have kept secret both their gold and the Greek character of Macedonia. An inscription in the Ionian alphabet on a 500 BC clay vase is thought to be one of the most important finds of recent years, as valuable as the gold which adorned the fully armed Macedonian warriors.
Thanks to the "HOPLITE" for bringing this to my attention!
LINOTHORAX: According to Homer, a few fragments of cloth and a few vase pieces, It's been assumed that "ONLY LINEN" was used for a Linothorax. That is up until now. Leather Breast plates have been found in Archontiko, Pella. QUESTION: Does or Should this change our point of view now?

COPPER HELMET
The Dipylon inscription is a short text written on an ancient Greek pottery vessel dated to c.740 BC. It is famous for being the oldest known samples of the use of the Greek alphabet.
QUESTION: IS THIS THE OLDEST SAMPLE OF THE GREEK ALPHABET?

LINOTHORAX RESPONSE I'm actually glad that this evidence of a leather breastplate was discovered. I have always disputed the fact that linothorax's were made purely of linen. We must remember that the the majority of hoplites in ancient Greece had to supply their own arms and armor. Being as many of them were farmers and Greece was not considered to be a particularly "rich" nation, a linothorax made completely of linen had to be expensive. As all males were expected to serve their city-states, there were probably numerous materials and construction designs of the linothorax, in order to meet a variety of budgets and needs. After several attempts at constructiong a linothorax even made of less costly canvas, anyone can understand that there were probably linothorax's with leather cores, or made completely of leather, or a variety of material. I've wondered if other types of more durable, less expensive materials or fabrics were used also. Sails of the time were made of a canvas like material, and to me logic says that a more durable material like this would surely have been carried over into personal armor. "HIERAX"
